As you may know, my birthday was a few weeks ago. Stitch decided to surprise me with this awesome action camera, the Polaroid Cube. You can’t even imagine my happiness when I opened the present and saw this cute little buddy.
I saw the Polaroid Cube for the first time on Photojojo, and it did catch my curiosity right away.
This little action camera is available in three colors: blue like mine, red and black. I think they’re all really cute! I called mine Polly because, you know, I have this little obsession where I have to give a name to everything valuable to me.
Here are the specifications for this camera, which I found on the official Polaroid Cube page:
- The cube is really tiny, only 35mm
- 124° wide-angle
- Splash-resistant, shockproof and mountable
- Resolution: 720p or 1080p
- MicroSD up to 32GB – sold separately
- Magnet bottom to stick it to every metal surface
- Takes both still photos and videos
- Audio: built-in microphone
- One USB port
- Price: 99$
The first thing you need to know about the Polaroid Cube is that, even if it is an action camera, it’s just not a GoPro. The GoPro quality is way better than the quality of the Cube, so don’t buy it expecting the same results. The quality of the pictures took with the Cube is pretty similar to the one of most phones now days. But, even said that, in my opinion the Polaroid Cube is still a great camera. It reacts pretty well to the changes of light and I’ve been able to shoot even in the dark.
One of the thing I probably love the most about the Polaroid Cube is how tiny it is. I literally take it everywhere with me, and every time I take it out of my pocket or my bag to shoot a few pictures, everybody around me always get so excited about it. I get asked a lot what is it, and how it works.
Also, I’m really in love with the wide-angle, which sometimes almost looks like a fish-eye (take a look at the examples at the bottom of this post).
There are a few accessories available for the Polaroid Cube, which are sold separately. I bought the waterproof case with its suction mount, that you can see in the photo above. I think it will be really fun to take some videos and pictures underwater next summer! I didn’t try it yet, but I read some great reviews about it. Also, I read that even if the Cube should be splash resistant, some people said their camera wasn’t working anymore after just a few splashes. Now, I don’t know what is their sense of splashing, but I’m not risking it for sure!
Another think that you will have to buy separately if you decide to spend on this tiny camera, is the microSD card. However, you can find some not-so-expensive ones online, so I guess it’s not that big deal.
To connect the camera to your computer and download the pictures and videos you took, you just have to remove the cap on the back of the camera and use the USB cable that comes with it. From your computer you will also be able to adjust a few things, like the sound of the camera (it normally beeps when you turn it on and off, which I didn’t like, so I muted it). In the back of the camera, you will also have the possibility to switch the resolution between 720p and 1080p. Since my SD card is 16GB, I always let it on 1080p.
I tried to shoot some videos with this camera and I have to say I was positively impressed with them. Once again, it’s not like a GoPro, but considering the price and how tiny it is, I think it does its job. If you’re filming while walking or while doing another activity, the video will probably shake a lot. Here is a video that shows the difference between a GoPro and the Polaroid Cube: you will notice how the GoPro is way more stable than the Polaroid Cube. However, I took some videos with Stitch, walking around the house and talking, and they looked good enough for me. I also took a video during a little party we had in our apartment in Fribourg. I put the Cube in an angle and let it there filming. The wide-angle did a great job in showing all the place, and I then sped up the video with iMovie. I decided not to show you an example of the videos I took just because they all have other people in it, but if you are interested, just let me know in the comments below. In the meantime, here’s another video example you can watch.
Here are three little examples of pictures I took with my little Polly. The one with Owly was taken in my room, with only artificial light.
To sum it up, I do think this camera is really cute and playful to take around all the time. If you’re looking for a serious action camera, I’d suggest you spend something more and get a GoPro or another camera like that. But if you just want to have fun and have a new little pocket-friend, the Polaroid Cube is the one for you!
